Let's Not Gatekeep Baking.

I get it. Danish Dough Whisk Culture makes people feel superior or inferior, depending on the person.

We’re not gonna do that here. Fancy tools are optional.

If that’s your thing, no argument! You are right that those tools are helpful and very pretty on the counter, and I hope you also enjoy my posts.

All we’re ditching here is the background judgment that happens.

This blog is for people who want to be a little more personable. Who might have money but no experience, no money or experience, or just like a more Stardew Valley feel. Of course, some of you are puzzled (it’s a very sweet video game, I recommend you check it out). Some of you just smiled and relaxed because that game is wholesome af. And some of you just spiked that blood pressure because as cozy as that game design is, you’re every bit the aggressive to-do list and deadline keeper that I am.

Disclaimer, though, I’m not gonna go through ConcernedApe’s entire cookbook here. Creators need their money, and we should support them, right? I may post a couple for special occasions, but you’ll see an SDV Cookbook tab added to the menu if that happens.

I was only referring to the vibe. I’m gonna talk to you like you’re right here with me, like we’re old friends who laugh and tease but never mean it. Like we’re sitting around with whatever good drink we each feel at the time and are about to make a big dang mess.

People are allowed to enjoy their fancy tools. People are allowed to not have fancy tools. I’m just here to remove that part as a barrier.

No dutch oven? There’s a work around for that. No stand mixer? Get real comfortable with kneading by hand. It’s a nice time to think and to work your arms. No proofing baskets? Hello, big bowl or pot and a (clean) rolled up tee-shirt!

Do I have some fancy tools? Yep! Some were given to me when I didn’t have the means. Some I bought when I did.

Have I always had fancy tools? Nope! So I very much understand the need for accessibility and financially inclusive instructions.

We’re gonna do our best, here, to all go together down this path. Whether you want to speed run it, mosey on through at your own pace, or just follow along at mine.

At FlatBottomedBread we bake how we like.

The sourdough tutorials will have weight measurements for those who like to use a scale and volume measurements for those who only have measuring cups/spoons. No guilt or passive aggressive warnings.

The ingredients and instructions will be at the top of the post so no one has to wade through my life story each time they want to bake. But there will be detailed instructions underneath so those that are new can have some help.

You want to do sourdough? Let’s head over to the sourdough page and that’s what we’ll work our way through.

Don’t have the time in your schedule but still want to bake bread? That’s okay, you’re gonna want to look at the active dry yeast pages.

Really want to bake, but don’t have any yeast at all? Maybe want to do a dessert instead? The little quick bread tab has some baking soda recipes and a bunch of yummy treats as well.

So! Choose your weapon, break out the flour, and let’s get baking!

Posts will happen once a week probably on Tuesdays, maybe twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at first, because making a bunch of posts at once is jarring to the search bots. And this is a baby website, so recipes and posts will become links once they are created and active. Thanks for your patience!

Sourdough, Active Dry Yeast, Baking Powder. You Can Do Whatever You Like.
